Hello, my name is Beatrice Rambaud. I trained in woodcarving and gilding at City and Guilds of London Art School, graduating in 2019.
I am based in Walthamstow (North London) in a workshop shared with some of my contemporaries and I carve wood using tools and techniques that have been used for hundreds of years. Together with my fellow carvers, I am proud to be the inheritor of such a long tradition which we are keen to keep alive and relevant to our modern age.
I am open to taking on all manner of different woodcarving or gilding work, whether contemporary or traditional, large or small, lettering or frame making, low relief or in the round.
I have had a variety of commissions, some from private clients, others from the National Trust, the Royal College of Surgeons, some London churches and the Diocese of Ely. If I cannot help you, I am usually able to point you in the direction of someone who can, thanks to the connections I have made through my training and work, with colleagues working in professions related to woodcarving and gilding.
I am always happy to work as part of a team, depending on the nature of the project and the timing for its completion. I like to use indigenous woods where possible, such as oak, lime, walnut or pine, mindful of sustainability in woodcarving.
The process is fairly similar for each commission: it will begin with some drawings and, after they are approved by the client, I will make a maquette in clay to test shapes and ideas and to visualise the final piece. This is also submitted to the client for approval and discussion. When it is finalised, it serves as my model which I copy onto the wood.
